  1. After listening to this debate I decided to use the same logic in finding the true church.

    If Jesus really meant it when he said he
    would establish his church and the gates of hell would not prevail against it.
    If the doctrines of evangelicals such as the bible alone, faith alone, scripture interprets itself, Jesus had real brothers and sisters, baptism and communion are just symbolic, no apostolic succession, no hierarchy,
    no central authority, etc..... if those are
    all true, and are what Jesus, the 12 apostles, St Paul, the first bishops of all of those first church plantings....if that is what they all taught, then what would you expect
    to find as you study the practices and beliefs of the earliest Christians?

    Wouldn't you expect to find a church that taught all of those things and continued teaching them right up until the present day? Wouldn't you expect to find evidence of just one Christian or just one congregation that believed in a 66 book Bible as their only authority, two main "symbolic" ordinances,
    Mary & Joseph had sex, no praying to Saints,
    no liturgy, adult only baptism, all at the same time.

    If the Bible is so clear and self-interpreting, and our only source of authority, and all we need is the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth, then wouldn't we expect to find common beliefs and practices among all Protestant churches since the Reformation.

    On the other hand, if tradition and successors and councils are required to maintain the unity of the church.....and you mass produce Bibles via the printing press, and distribute it among everyone and tell them it is your only
    authority, wouldn't you expect to find hundreds and hundreds of groups, splintering and dividing and arguing over their interpretation of the Bible, forming different denominations and differing teachings based on their own
    private interpretations of Scripture.

    Old earth vs young earth and apostolic christianity vs modern evangelicalism. The parallels are amazing!!
